Growing Up Autistic by Rohan Dixit

I was diagnosed with autism very young. My parents told me about my autism as a child. This helped me understand why I struggled with some things but I did not think much about it otherwise. I did have a few meltdowns when I was younger but my childhood was mostly great.

I spent part of my childhood in Pune, where my whole family, including my grandparents, aunts and uncles, stayed. I was very close to them. I was in school and it was pretty great. I had a group of friends and was quite popular among them.

My interest in cars started in Pune, when I was 6 years old, and watched a Formula One race with my uncle, who is a car lover and blogger. This interest has lasted all my life and has helped me through some tough times. My parents have always supported and encouraged my interest and even used it to teach me things when I was younger. I have also been able to convert the interest into blogging with the help of my mentor. You can check out my blog here. It’s called Rohan’s Blog.

I moved to Bangalore with my parents when I was 8 years old and things were a bit rough for a while since the rest of my family was in Pune and I missed them. Luckily, I met some amazing childhood friends, who were very accepting of me and my autism. I also got plenty of attention from girls. According to them, I was a cute guy with a great smile, apparently. Some of my friends, especially girls, were quite protective of me and looked out for me. My family and friends have been very accepting of my autism and this has helped me a lot.

Unfortunately, my health took a turn for the worse, and I was in a bad condition, mostly stuck at home or in the hospital. Whenever I had the energy, I would do gaming and watch sports on TV. I also really started to listen to music and watch YouTube videos, since it was one of the few things I could do during this time. Eventually, my condition improved and I became healthier. My interests in cars, gaming, sports, music and YouTube videos, as well as my parents, family, friends, doctors and a couple of amazing nurses got me through those horrible days.

After I improved, I started homeschooling, which worked really well for me. I also went out a lot to different places and started swimming. I got to know other autistics and realized how many of them had similar issues and similar stories to me. This inspired me to become involved in autism awareness and advocacy and create this platform to give autistics a place to share their voices because they deserve to be heard.
