Why I Want to Advocate for People with Special Needs by Rohan Dixit

I am Rohan Dixit. I am 18 years old and the co-founder of C.A.R.E for Autism, in case you didn’t already know that.

I was diagnosed with autism when I was 4 years old, and my mom told me about it when I was 10 years old. I did not think much about it at the time. As I grew up, I got to meet and know quite a few children with special needs. They were all younger than me, but I became pretty close with them, and I think that is what made me start to think about autism and special needs more. I was a teenager at the time and knew that I needed to help guide my friends in whatever way I could.

Last year, I joined a group called Club Youngistan, which is a group for teenagers and young adults with special needs. It was the first time since I came to know about my autism that I actually talked to people with special needs my age. I felt like I had met my long-lost brothers and sisters and I connected with them instantly. I got to know the members pretty well and heard their stories and experiences.

I found out that Club Youngistan was one of the very few groups of its kind here in India. I was shocked that there was such a lack of recognition for people with special needs and I knew something needed to be done to change that. That is what inspired me to really get involved with the special needs community and create this website. I also have my own blog called Rohan’s Blog, where I post about my interests, mostly stuff about cars.

I would like to see people with special needs get much-deserved recognition and children with special needs get more support, so that they have it better and easier than me, because there was not much of it during my time. I decided to write this post and share my story and experience to help younger kids with special needs and their families, because that is what I would like to see happen.
